Discover Hidden Treasures at Silent Valley this Summer

15 July 2011 11:47

Silent Valley Mountain Park is located in the heart of the Mournes and has plenty on offer for a family day out this Summer.

The park, which has recently been revamped, has lots of nature trails on offer suitable for a young family with a buggy and mountain walks for the more adventurous.

Celine Rodgers from NI Water, was involved in the upgrade:

"A few hidden treasures which we have recently upgraded in the park include:

Ӣ New picnic tables;
Ӣ New toilet facilities and signage;
”¢ An extended children’s play park;
Ӣ A new visitors centre;
Ӣ Improved car parking and
Ӣ New art sculptures.

"The duck pond and play park will keep the children entertained while the rest of the family enjoy a picnic and take in the breathtaking views of the reservoir and the Mourne Mountains.

"The park is just over an hours drive from Belfast and is home to the biggest reservoir in Northern Ireland holding over 13,000 million litres of water and stretching for 2 ½ miles! Silent Valley is a fascinating place to show your family first hand where their water comes from and the visitors centre has some great tips on water efficiency.

"There is also a café on site which is open from 10am to 6.30pm each day in June, July and August. A shuttle bus service is also available during July and August and operates frequently between the car park and Ben Crom."

So, pack up the car, the family and a picnic and spend the day at the Silent Valley. If you are not ready to go home after, visit Newcastle town which is a 10 minute drive away where you can enjoy a walk along the beach or stop off for some fish and chips!
