NI Water to Invest £700,000 to Improve Water Infrastructure in Fintona, Co Tyrone

28 November 2016 16:24

Northern Ireland Water will begin an extensive programme of work to refurbish the water infrastructure serving the Syonfin and Dungoran areas of Fintona, County Tyrone in early December.

The work, which will involve upgrading the water main between Syonfin Pumping Station and Dungoran New Service Reservoir as well as carrying out refurbishments at Syonfin Pumping Station, will improve the security of supply for local customers and help protect against freeze/ thaw events in winter.

The project will get underway on Monday 5th December, with pipelaying being undertaken on the Ecclesville Road from its junction with the Kilnahusogue Road. During this first phase of works traffic lights will be implemented on the Ecclesville Road from 7.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday. No traffic lights will be in operation during weekends.

NI Water’s contractor for the project, GEDA Construction, will cease work for Christmas on 16th December and will resume pipelaying on this section on Tuesday 3rd January 2017.

In agreement with TransportNI, further lane and road closures will be implemented in the area in the New Year as the contractor works to complete the pipelaying in the safest possible manner. Letter drops will be carried out and signage erected in advance to advise the local community on any roadworks and restrictions.
Martin Gillen, NI Water’s Project Manager for the scheme commented: “This investment is good news for many customers in rural County Tyrone. The new pipeline and pumping station upgrade will enhance the integrity of the local water supply infrastructure and provide a welcome boost to the local construction sector, with the contract for the work being won by Coalisland-based firm GEDA Construction.

“NI Water, GEDA and our technical consultants, McAdam Design, will work to ensure that this contract is carried out with minimum disruption to the local community. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses at all times and further updates will be circulated and signage in place as the scheme progresses. We appreciate the co-operation of residents and road users as we work to improve the local water infrastructure.”
