Works Commencing Ormeau Road/Ormeau Avenue Junction – Ormeau Sewerage Improvement Scheme

18 June 2019 11:29

Work is progressing well, and is now nearing completion on this major £5 million project to improve the sewerage infrastructure in the Ormeau area, which includes work around Ormeau Avenue/Lower Ormeau Road, Dublin Road, Bruce Street, Sandy Row, Joy Street and sections of the lower Ormeau Road.

Ormeau Road / Ormeau Avenue Junction

Following extensive investigation works throughout this major project, NI Water has identified a section of sewer across the Lower Ormeau Road (close to the junction with Ormeau Avenue), which is in very poor condition and requires urgent replacement. In order to avoid further disruption in the area at a later date, this section of work will be completed under the current contract.

Work will begin on the left turning lane from the Ormeau Road into Ormeau Avenue during the week commencing 24th June 2019. During this phase of work there will be no access to Ormeau Avenue from the Ormeau Road, a diversion route will be signposted via Cromac Street/May Street/Adelaide Street. Once this section is complete, work will progress out onto the Ormeau Road where a lane closure will be in place. Traffic flow will be maintained during this phase with the use of temporary traffic signals. Traffic delays around this junction are expected during this time. We anticipate that all of this work will take approximately 6 weeks to complete, with work suspended during the July holidays form 5th – 22nd July.

When complete, this investment will significantly reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding in this area of Belfast during periods of heavy rainfall. Environmental pollution will also be reduced, and the water quality in the Blackstaff Culvert and River Lagan will be enhanced.

NI Water would like to thank the public for their ongoing patience and cooperation during the completion of this essential improvement work. We assure you that we will continue do everything that we can to keep all disruption to a minimum for the remainder of the works.
