Essential Watermains Improvement Scheme in the Pipeline for Hill Street, Newry

20 December 2013 13:08

NI Water will be commencing an essential £300,000 Watermains Improvement Scheme in the Hill Street area of Newry in January 2014 for approximately 3 months. The existing infrastructure is in need of repair, and it is essential that NI Water upgrades the necessary watermains in advance of new surfaces being put in place by Newry Council’s “Public Realm” scheme in the town centre.

Following recent discussions with local elected representatives, DRD Road Service and local trade representatives, this work which was originally planned to begin in October 2013 will now take place in January 2014 to avoid disruption during the busy Christmas period as agreed.

There are three main areas where the work will take place; Hill Street between the Kildare Street and Margaret Square, Marcus Street between Marcus Square and Lower Water Street, and Hill Street between O’Hagan Street and St Colman’s Park.

As Hill Street is the main arterial route in this area, work will take place at night between Sunday and Thursday from 20.00 to 06.00. Work on Marcus Street will take place during the day as normal. There will be no road closures in place and vehicular and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. All businesses will be open for business as usual. Work on Marcus Street will commence on Monday 13th January, while work on Hill Street will begin at night time during the week commencing 19th January 2014.

This programme of work is good news for the local area, as the upgraded watermains will improve the quality, reliability and security of the water supply across Northern Ireland, while also reducing leakage and improving pressure in the area.

As with all work of this nature, there will be an element of disruption throughout this improvement scheme. However, NI Water and our contractor Lagan Construction will continue to work closely with the council throughout this programme of work, and would like to thank the public and local businesses in advance for their patience and cooperation. We will do everything we can to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption. Customer queries regarding this work should be directed to Waterline on 08457 440088, please quote “Lagan Construction Watermains Rehabilitation Programme.”
